2383 – ʿAli ibn ʿUmar ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Ahmad narrated to us; he said: My father narrated to me; he said: Ismaʿil ibn Ibrahim—who is Ibn ʿUlayyah—narrated to me in the year 182 AH; he said: Sadaqah ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to me, from al-Harith ibn ʿUyaynah, that ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz was brought a man who had reviled ʿUthman. He asked, “What drove you to curse him?” The man replied, “I hated him.” ʿUmar said, “You hated a man and therefore cursed him?” He then ordered that the man be given thirty lashes.
