2379 – ʿUbayd Allah ibn Muhammad related to us; Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Anmati narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn ʿAli ibn Hamdan narrated to us; he said: Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated to us; he said: Abu al-Ahwas, from Mughira, from Shibak, reported:

“It reached ʿAli that Ibn al-Aswad was disparaging Abu Bakr and ʿUmar. ʿAli had the man brought before him and called for a sword, intending to execute him. When people interceded, he said, ‘He must not reside in any town where I live,’ and he exiled him to al-Sham. The correct version, however, states that he banished him to al-Madaʾin.”
