2314 – Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Bishr informed us; he said: Ismaʿil ibn Muhammad narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Muhammad narrated to us; he said: Salih ibn Hatim ibn Wardān narrated to us; he said: my father narrated from Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, from Ḥumayd ibn Hilāl, from ʿUbādah ibn Qurṭ al-Laythī:

When the Khawārij captured him in al-Ahwāz he said to them, “Be satisfied with me on the basis of what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted when I embraced Islam.”

They asked, “And what did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) accept from you?”

He replied, “I went to him and bore witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and he accepted that from me.”

They refused—and they killed him.
