2312 – Ahmad ibn ʿUbayd informed us; he said: ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashir narrated to us; he said: Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us; he said: ʿAffan narrated to us; he said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Saʿid ibn Jumhan, who said:
We were fighting the Khawarij: they were on that bank of the river while we were on this bank. We called out to one of them, “Abu Fayruz, woe to you! Here is your patron, Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa!” He replied, “What an excellent man—if only he had emigrated!” Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa then asked, “What is that enemy of Allah saying?” We answered, “He says: ‘What an excellent man—if only he had emigrated.’” Abdullah said, “Is there any emigration left after the emigration I made with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?”
Then he added, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Glad tidings to the one who kills them or is killed by them; glad tidings to the one who kills them or is killed by them.’”
