2308 – Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Qasim reported to us: Ismaʿil ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Mansur narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us; he said: Maʿmar narrated to us, from Ayyub, from al-Hasan, from al-Ahnaf ibn Qays, from Abu Bakrah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “When two Muslims confront one another with their swords and one kills the other, both the killer and the slain are in the Fire.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, we understand the killer, but what about the one who was killed?” He replied, “He too intended to kill his brother.” Muslim transmitted this hadith through this very chain, and al-Bukhari recorded it in the narration of Hammad ibn Zayd.
