2304 – Muhammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Muhammad ibn Humayd informed us; he said: Ahmad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Wakil narrated to us; he said: ʿUmar ibn Shabbah narrated to us; he said: Yahya ibn Saʿid, from Muhammad ibn Mihran, related that Abu al-Muthanna said:

“We were with ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr while al-Hajjaj was besieging him. ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar would perform the prayer with Ibn al-Zubayr; but if he missed the prayer with Ibn al-Zubayr and then heard al-Hajjaj’s call to prayer, he would pray with al-Hajjaj. Someone said to him, ‘Do you pray with both Ibn al-Zubayr and al-Hajjaj?’ He answered, ‘When they summon us to Allah, we respond; and when they summon us to Satan, we leave them.’”
