2297 – And Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Ṭūsī informed us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb related to us; he said: Abū ʿUtbah related to us; he said: Baqiyyah narrated from Buḥayr ibn Saʿd, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAmr al-Sulamī, from al-ʿIrbaḍ ibn Sāriyah:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once addressed us after the dawn prayer with an eloquent admonition that brought tears to the eyes and caused the hearts to quake. A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, this seems to be a farewell sermon; what do you enjoin upon us?” He replied:

“I urge you to fear Allah, and to listen and obey even if the one placed over you is an Abyssinian slave. Whoever lives long among you will witness great discord. Beware ⦗1299⦘ of newly-introduced matters, for every innovation is misguidance. Whoever reaches that time must cling to my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly guided, upright caliphs. Bite down on it with your molars.”
