2276 – Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Yaʿqub narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Harun al-Ruwayani narrated to us; he said: ʿAmr ibn ʿAli narrated to us; he said: Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, ḥ.

2277 – Ahmad ibn ʿUbayd also narrated to us; ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashshir narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Sinan narrated to us; he said: Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah, who heard ʿAmr ibn Bajalah say:

“I was the scribe of Jazʾ ibn Muʿawiyah, the uncle of al-Ahnaf ibn Qays. One year before his death we received a letter ⦗1288⦘ from ʿUmar which stated:

‘Put to death every male and female sorcerer; separate every Magian man from the woman who is within the prohibited degrees of kinship; and forbid them from their zamzamah (muttered incantations).’

Accordingly, we executed three sorceresses, and he went on to separate each man from the female relative forbidden to him in accordance with the Book of Allah. He then prepared an abundant meal, and they laid down a load of silver equal to one—or two—pack-mules. He placed the sword upon his thigh, and they ate without any zamzamah.
