2264 – Ahmad ibn ʿUbayd informed us; ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashshir informed us; he said: Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us; he said: Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us; he said: Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī narrated to us, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah, who said:
“The sun was eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a day of intense heat. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led his Companions in prayer. He kept the standing so long that they began to collapse, then he bowed and made the bowing long, then he rose and remained standing for a long time, then he prostrated twice. After that he stood up and did the like of ⦗1268⦘ that. He would step forward and then step back. In all, the prayer comprised four rakʿahs and four prostrations.
“Then he said: ‘Everything you have been promised was displayed before me. Paradise was shown to me; had I reached out for a cluster from it, I would have taken it—or he said: I did reach out for a cluster but my hand could not grasp it’ (Hishām was uncertain). ‘And the Fire was shown to me; I kept drawing back from it, afraid that it might engulf you. I saw in it a tall, dark-skinned woman of Ḥimyar being punished on account of a cat she had tied up: she neither fed it nor let it loose to eat the insects of the earth. And I saw Abū Thamāmah ʿAmr ibn Mālik dragging his trachea in the Fire.’”
Muslim recorded the narration through Hishām.
