2262 – ʿAli ibn Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaʿqūb informed us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim informed us; he said: It was read aloud to Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā while I was present and listening, and he said: Ibn Wahb told us that Mālik related to him from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“The sun was eclipsed, so the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) led the people in prayer. He stood for a long time and recited nearly the whole of Sūrat al-Baqarah. Then he bowed in a long bowing, rose, and stood again for a long time, though shorter than the first standing. After that he bowed a long bowing, shorter than the first, and then prostrated.
He rose and stood for a long time, shorter than the first standing, bowed a long bowing, shorter than the first, rose and stood again for a long time, shorter than the first, bowed a long bowing, shorter than the first, and then prostrated. When he finished the prayer, the sun had become clear.
He then said, ‘The sun and the moon are two of Allah’s signs; they are not eclipsed because of anyone’s death or life. So when you see that, remember Allah.’
The people said, ‘Messenger of Allah, we saw you reach out for something where you were standing, and then we saw you draw back.’
He replied, ‘I saw Paradise—or Paradise was shown to me—and I reached for a cluster of its fruit. Had I taken it, you would have eaten from it for as long as the world lasts. I was also shown the Fire, and I have never seen a sight more terrifying than today, and I saw that most of its inhabitants are women.’
They asked, ‘Why is that, Messenger of Allah?’
He said, ‘Because of their ingratitude.’
Someone asked, ‘Do they disbelieve in Allah?’
He answered, ‘They are ungrateful to the husband and ungrateful for kindness. If you were to show one of them kindness for a lifetime, then she saw something in you ⦗1267⦘ she would say, “I have never seen any good from you at all.”’
Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, and all the scholars have recorded this ḥadith.
