2223 – Ahmad ibn ʿUbayd related to us; ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashshir related to us; he said: Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us; he said: Abu Muʿawiyah narrated to us; al-Aʿmash reported, from Abu Ṣāliḥ, from Abu Saʿīd.
2224 – Likewise, ʿUbayd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn ʿAli told us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Salm ibn Junādah narrated to us; Abu Muʿawiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from Abu Ṣāliḥ, from Abu Saʿīd, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah will say to Adam, peace be upon him, on the Day of Resurrection: ‘O Adam! Rise and send forth from your descendants a contingent for the Fire.’ He will reply, ‘My Lord, what is this contingent for the Fire?’ Allah will say, ‘From every thousand, nine-hundred and ninety-nine, and one will remain.’
At that moment the child will turn gray, ‘and every pregnant woman will miscarry, and you will see the people intoxicated while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe’ (Q 22:2)—this is how al-Aʿmash recited it.
This weighed heavily on the people and they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, from every thousand, nine-hundred and ninety-nine go to the Fire and only one remains—who among us will be that one?’ The matter distressed them, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, then returned and said:
“Rejoice! One thousand will be from Gog and Magog, and one from you.”
This is the wording of Muslim ibn Junādah. Ahmad ibn Sinān added: “By Allah, I hope that you will be one quarter of the people of Paradise.” They proclaimed takbīr and praised Allah. Then he said, “I hope that you will be one third of the people of Paradise.” Again they proclaimed takbīr and praised Allah. Then he said, “I ⦗1253⦘ hope that you will be one half of the people of Paradise.” They proclaimed takbīr and praised Allah.
He concluded: “Your number among the nations is no more than a single black hair on a white ox, or a single white hair on a black ox.”
Both transmitters recorded this narration.
