2217 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Qāsim and ʿUbayd Allah ibn Ahmad al-Muqriʾ told us; they said: Ahmad ibn ʿAli ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Shawkar narrated to us; he said: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn narrated to us – ḥ.
2218 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Juʿfī also told us; he said: Muhammad ibn ʿAli narrated to us; Ahmad ibn Ḥāzim narrated to us; Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn narrated to us; he said: Hishām ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said:
“We asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?’ He replied, ‘Will you ⦗1250⦘ have any difficulty in seeing the sun at midday when the sky is clear and cloudless? Will you have any difficulty in seeing the full moon on a cloudless night?’ We said, ‘No, Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘You will have no more difficulty in seeing Him on the Day of Resurrection than you have in seeing either of them.
When that Day comes, a herald will call out: “Let every community follow what it used to worship.” No one who worshipped an idol, an image, or a statue will remain except that they will set off, tumbling into the Fire. Those who worshipped Allah alone will be left—whether they were righteous or sinful—along with the last remnants of the People of the Book.
Then Hell will be brought forth, appearing like a mirage whose parts crush into one another, and the Bridge will be laid across it.’ We asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah—may our fathers and mothers be ransomed for you—what is the Bridge?’ He said, ‘A slippery causeway from which feet slide; upon it are hooks, talons, and a thorny plant that grows in Najd called ʿAqīf, also known as as-saʿdān. The believers will cross it as swiftly as a flash of lightning, as the blink of an eye, as the wind, as birds in flight, or as the finest horses with their riders. Some will come through safe and sound, others will be scratched and then released, and still others will be hurled into the Fire of Hell.
By the One in whose hand is my soul, no one will plead for what he believes to be his right more earnestly than the believers will plead on behalf of their brothers.’
Muslim recorded this ḥadīth through the narration of Jaʿfar.
