2213 – And I, Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Juʿfī, said: ʿUbayd ⦗1247⦘ Allāh ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Qāsim al-Quṭaʿī narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; he said: Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī narrated to us; he said: Hammām, from Qatādah, from Ṣafwān ibn Muḥriz al-Māzinī, who said:

“I was serving Ibn ʿUmar when a man came to him and asked, ‘Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, how did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speak about the private audience (al-najwā)?’ He replied, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:

“Allah will draw the believer close, will shelter him beneath His covering, and will conceal him from the people. He will then say to him, ‘Do you acknowledge such-and-such?’ The believer will answer, ‘Yes, my Lord.’ He will say, ‘Do you acknowledge the sin of such-and-such?’ The believer will answer, ‘Yes, my Lord.’ He continues, ‘Do you acknowledge?’ and the believer continues, ‘Yes,’ until, when he has confessed all his sins and thinks himself ruined, Allah will say, ‘I have forgiven them for you.’ Then he will be handed the record of his good deeds.

“As for the unbeliever and the hypocrite, the witnesses will declare”—and in the narration of Khālid it adds—“and a voice will call out before all creation: ‘These are the ones who lied against their Lord; surely the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers’ (Hūd 11:18).

“The wording here is that of Hammām. Al-Bukhārī recorded it from Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl, from Hammām, and Muslim recorded it through Saʿīd and others, from Qatādah. In the sound report of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī:

‘When the Day of Resurrection comes, a herald will call out: “Let every nation follow what it used to worship.” None who worshiped an idol, an image, or a figure will remain without going off, one after another, to fall into the Fire. Those who worshiped Allah alone—whether righteous or sinful—and the downtrodden remnants of the People of the Book will stay behind.

‘Then Hell will be brought forth, appearing like a mirage, each part crushing into the next.’”
