2201 – ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar related to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim related to us; he said: Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us. ḥ
2202 – Likewise, Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh said: Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar al-Muʿaddal narrated to us; he said: Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us; he said: Ibn Wahb narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith narrated to us, from Abū Yūnus, the freedman of Abū Hurayrah.
In the recension of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith informed me that Abū Yūnus told him, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said:
“By Him in whose hand is my soul, no one from this community, nor any Jew or Christian, who hears about me—”
• In al-Muʿaddal’s version it reads: “from among the Jews or the Christians who dies—”
• In ʿAbd al-Raḥmān’s version it continues: “then dies without believing in me—”
—and the phrase “in me” is absent from al-Muʿaddal’s wording—
“—in what I have been sent with, except that he will be one of the inhabitants of the Fire.”
Muslim recorded this ḥadīth in his Ṣaḥīḥ through the transmission of Yūnus.
