2197 — Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad al-Sāwī and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar both related to us; they said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Muqriʾ narrated to us; he said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who traced the report back to the Prophet ﷺ:
They said, “O Messenger of Allah, shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?” He replied, “Do you have any difficulty in seeing the sun at noon when the sky is cloudless?” They said, “No.” He said, “Do you have any difficulty in seeing the full moon on a cloudless night?” They said, “No.” He said, “By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, you will have no more difficulty in seeing your Lord than you have in seeing either of them.”
He continued: “A servant will meet his Lord on the Day of Resurrection, and He will say, ‘O so-and-so, did I not honour you, make you eminent, marry you off, place horses and camels at your service, and leave you to lead and amass wealth? Did you think you would ever meet Me?’ He will answer, ‘No.’ Allah will say, ‘Today I forget you just as you forgot Me.’
“Then He will say to another, ‘O so-and-so, did I not honour you, make you eminent, marry you off, place horses and camels at your service, and leave you to lead and amass wealth? Did you think you would ever meet Me?’ He will answer, ‘No.’ Allah will say, ‘I forget you just as you forgot Me.’
“Then a third will come and say, ‘I believed in You, in Your Book, and in Your messengers; I fasted ⦗1239⦘, gave charity, and prayed,’ and he will go on praising himself with whatever good he can mention. Allah will say to him, ‘Very well—stay here.’ Then He will say, ‘Now We shall raise a witness against you.’ The man will wonder, ‘Who will testify against me?’ His mouth will then be sealed, and it will be said to his thigh, ‘Speak!’ Whereupon his thigh, flesh, and bones will speak of what he used to do, so that he can offer no excuse for himself. That man is the hypocrite upon whom Allah is displeased and angry.
“Then a caller will announce, ‘Let every nation follow what it used to worship.’ The devils and the idols will be followed by their devotees, while only those bearing the sign of the believers will remain, three times over. Our Lord—majestic is He—will say, ‘Bring those to Me.’ They will say, ‘These are the servants of Allah, the believers. We believed in Allah and never associated anything with Him. Here we stand until our Lord comes to us.’ We will then proceed until we reach the Bridge, and upon it are hooks of fire that snatch people away. At that moment intercession will be granted to me, and I shall say: ‘O Allah, keep [them] safe, keep [them] safe’—that is, ‘O Allah, keep [them] safe, keep [them] safe.’
“When he has crossed the Bridge, everyone who spent a pair of whatever wealth he possessed in the way of Allah will find every gatekeeper of Paradise calling to him: ‘O servant of Allah, O Muslim, here is goodness—come!’
“Abū Bakr said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, will that servant be called from every door so that he may enter through whichever he wishes?’ The Prophet struck his shoulder with his hand and said, ‘By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, I hope you will be among them.’ ”
Muslim recorded this ḥadīth.
