2194 — Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Fārisi narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Milās narrated to us; he said: Mūsā ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us; he said: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us; he said: Shaybān—and others—reported from Qatādah, from Ṣafwān ibn Muḥriz, who said:

A man came to Ibn ʿUmar and asked, “Ibn ʿUmar, how did you hear the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—speak about the confidential audience (al-najwā)?” He replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, say:

‘The believer will draw near to his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until He places His covering over him. Then He will ask, “Do you acknowledge (your sins)?” He will reply, “I acknowledge, my Lord.” He will ask again, “Do you acknowledge?” and he will reply, “I acknowledge, my Lord.” He will ask a third time, “Do you acknowledge?” and again he will reply, “I acknowledge, my Lord.” This will continue for as long as Allah wills. Then Allah will say, “I concealed them for you in the world, and today I forgive them for you.”

As for the disbeliever and the hypocrite, they will be called out before all witnesses: “These are the ones who lied against their Lord; indeed, the curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers.”’

Both al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded this report through Qatādah, and al-Bukhari also cited Shaybān’s version as corroboration.
