He said: Mubarak ibn Fudalah narrated to us, from Ubayd Allah, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, from Umar, who said: “Be suspicious of personal opinion in matters of religion. I saw myself rejecting the command of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, through my own judgment, striving earnestly; yet, by Allah, I spared no effort in seeking the truth. That was on the Day of Abu Jandal, when the disbelievers—the people of Mecca—were before the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. He said, ‘Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.’ They said, ‘We have accepted what you say, but write: By Your name, O Allah.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, accepted, but I refused to yield to them, until he said, ‘O Umar, you see that I have accepted, yet you still refuse?’” He said: “So I accepted.”
