2180 – ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah informed us; Isma‘il ibn Muhammad told us; Muhammad ibn ‘Ubayd Allah ibn Yazid ibn al-Munadi related to us; Yunus ibn Muhammad reported to us; Mu‘tamir ibn Sulayman transmitted from his father, from Yahya ibn Ya‘mur, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said:

I heard ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab say: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the company of some people, a man appeared whose clothes showed no sign of travel though he was clearly not from the town. He made his way through the gathering until he knelt before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, sitting as one of us sits in prayer. Then he placed his hands on the knees of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked, “O Muhammad, what is Islam?”

He replied, “Islam is that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; that you establish the prayer, give the alms, perform the pilgrimage, make the minor pilgrimage, bathe after major ritual impurity, perfect the ablution, and fast the month of Ramadan.”

The man said, “If I do all that, am I a Muslim?” He answered, “Yes.”

The man said, “You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad. What is iman (faith)?”

He said, “Faith is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His scriptures, and His messengers; that you believe in Paradise and Hell, in the Balance, in the resurrection after death, and that you believe in destiny, its good and its evil.”

The man asked, “If I do that, am I a believer?” He replied, “Yes.”

The man said, “You have spoken the truth.”
