- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿUthman did likewise. Hanbal relayed to us, saying: I heard ʿAli ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Madīni in the year 221 AH at Basra declare: “We believe in the punishment of the grave and affirm that it is real; this community will be tried in their graves and will be asked about the Prophet ﷺ. We likewise believe in Munkar and Nakir.”
٢١٥٩ - وأنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، أنا عُثْمَانُ، نا حَنْبَلٌ، سَمِعْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمَدِينِيَّ سَنَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَمِائَتَيْنِ بِالْبَصْرَةِ يَقُولُ: " نُؤْمِنُ بِعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَنَقُولُ: إِنَّهُ حَقٌّ، وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ تُفْتَنُ فِي قُبُورِهَا، وَتُسْأَلُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، وَنُؤْمِنُ بِمُنْكرٍ وَنَكِيرٍ "
