2137 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jaʿfar informed us; he said: Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated to us; he said: Abū al-Ashʿath Aḥmad ibn al-Miqdām narrated to us; he said: Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us …
2138 – And I, ʿUbayd ibn Muslim ibn Yaḥyā, say: al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl told us; he said: Aḥmad ibn al-Miqdām narrated to us; he said: Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; he said: Saʿīd …
2139 – And I, ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar, say: Yaʿqūb ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us; he said: Ḥafṣ ibn ʿUmar—and Bishr ibn al-Muḍaffar likewise—narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Isḥāq, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When one of you is placed in his grave— or, in another wording, when the deceased is interred—”
In the version of Yazīd: “there come to him two angels, blue-black in appearance. One of them is called Munkar and the other Nakīr. They ask him, ‘What did you use to say about this man?’—Yazīd added: about Muḥammad ﷺ. He (the Prophet) said: The person will answer with whatever he used to say.
Both transmissions agree that if he was a believer he will say, ‘He is the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger.’
They then say to him—Ḥafṣ’s wording is: ‘We had…,’ while Yazīd’s is: ‘Indeed, we knew that you would say this’—so his grave is opened up for him ⦗1207⦘ seventy cubits and filled with light.” Yazīd added: “Then it is said to him, ‘Sleep.’”
The two narrations continue: “He says, ‘Let me return to my family so that I may inform them,’ twice.” (Yazīd does not mention the word “twice.”) It is then said to him: “Sleep like the sleep of a bridegroom,” and Yazīd adds: “whom none awakens except the dearest of his family to him, until Allah raises him from his resting place.” Yazīd added this phrase.
“But if he was a hypocrite he will say, ‘I do not know; I only heard the people saying something’—Yazīd added:—‘so I repeated it.’ Both versions agree that they will say to him, ‘Indeed, we knew’—and in Bishr’s wording: ‘We certainly knew that you would say this.’ Then it will be said to the earth, ‘Close in upon him,’ and it will close in on him until his ribs interlock. He will continue to be punished until Allah raises him from his resting place.” Yazīd added that.
