2135 – ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad also reported to us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl said: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; he said: Jarīr related to us, from Manṣūr, from Abū Wāʾil, from Masrūq, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“An elderly woman from among the Jewish women of Medina came in to see me and said, ‘The occupants of the graves are being punished inside their graves.’ I dismissed her claim and was reluctant to believe her. She left, and then the Prophet ﷺ entered. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, an old woman from the Jews has just been here and she alleges that the people of the graves are being punished in their graves.’ He replied, ‘She has spoken the truth; they are being punished with a torment that every animal can hear.’
After that I never saw him in any prayer without seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave.”
Recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
