2132 – ʿAbd Allah ibn Muslim and ʿUbayd Allah ibn Ahmad related to us; they said: al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl related to us; he said: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; he said: ʿAmr ibn Ḥumrān narrated to us, from Saʿīd, from Qatādah, from Anas, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“When a servant is laid in his grave and his companions walk away—so that he even hears ⦗1204⦘ the shuffle of their sandals—two angels come to him, seat him upright, and say: ‘What did you use to say about this man, about Muhammad ﷺ?’

• As for the believer, he replies, ‘I testify that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.’ They then say, ‘Look at your place in Hell; Allah has replaced it for you with a place in Paradise.’”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ added, “Both of their graves—each one of them.” Qatādah said: “We were told that his grave is widened for him seventy cubits and filled with greenery until the Day they are resurrected.” He then returned to Anas’s report:

“• But as for the disbeliever and the hypocrite, when they are asked, ‘What did you use to say about this man?’ they answer, ‘I have no idea; I only repeated what the people used to say.’ It is said to him, ‘You neither understood nor recited.’ Then he is struck between his ears with an iron hammer, and he screams—a scream heard by all who are near him except the two weighty creatures (humankind and jinn).”

Some transmitters added: “His grave is then constricted around him until his ribs interlock.”

This narration was recorded by al-Bukhārī and by Muslim through the chain of Saʿīd.
