2098 – ʿAbd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn ʿAli related to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad related to us; he said: Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us; he said ⦗1187⦘: ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith informed me that Bakr ibn Sawādah told him, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ:

The Prophet ﷺ recited Allah’s words about Abraham: “My Lord, they have indeed led many people astray; so whoever follows me is truly of me” (Ibrāhīm 36), and the words of Jesus: “If You punish them, they are Your servants” (Al-Māʾidah 118). He then raised his hands and said, “O Allah, my ummah, my ummah, my ummah!” and he wept.

Allah, Exalted be He, said, “O Gabriel, go to Muhammad—and your Lord knows best—and ask him: ‘What makes you weep?’” Gabriel came and posed the question, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed him—though He already knew best. Allah said, “O Gabriel, return to Muhammad and say: ‘We shall surely please you concerning your ummah and shall never cause you grief.’”
