2062 – And I was also told by Aḥmad ibn ʿUbayd; he said: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashshir reported to us; he said: Aḥmad ibn Sinān reported to us; he said: Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us; he said: Hishām, the companion of al-Dastuwāʾī, narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The believers will gather on the Day of Resurrection, inspired to do so, and they will say, ‘If only we could seek intercession with our Lord so that He would relieve us of this place of ours.’ They will come to Adam and say, ‘You are the father of mankind; Allah created you with His own hand, caused His angels to prostrate to you, and taught you the names of all things. Intercede for us with your Lord so that He may ease us from this standing of ours.’ He will reply, ‘I am not up to it,’ and he will mention to them the sin he committed. ‘But go to Noah.’
“They will go to Noah and he will say, ‘I am not up to it,’ and he will mention to them the sin he committed. ‘Rather, go to the Friend of the All-Merciful.’ They will come to Abraham and he will say, ‘I am not up to it,’ and he will mention to them the errors he committed. ‘But go to Moses, a servant to whom Allah gave the Torah and with whom He spoke directly.’
“They will come to Moses and he will say, ‘I am not ⦗1171⦘ up to it,’ and he will mention to them the sin he committed. ‘But go to Jesus, the servant of Allah and His Messenger, His Word and a spirit from Him.’ They will come to Jesus and he will say, ‘I am not up to it; rather, go to Muḥammad, a servant whose past and future sins Allah has forgiven.’
“They will then come to me. I will proceed to my Lord, ask permission to enter, and permission will be granted. When I behold my Lord I will fall down in prostration to Him, and Allah will leave me as long as He wills. Then it will be said: ‘Raise your head, Muḥammad; speak and you will be heard, ask and you will be given, intercede and your intercession will be accepted.’ I will praise my Lord with praises He teaches me; then I will intercede, and He will set a limit for me, and I will admit them into Paradise.
“I shall return; when I behold my Lord I will fall down in prostration. He will leave me as long as He wills, then it will be said: ‘Raise your head, Muḥammad; speak and you will be heard, ask and you will be given, intercede and your intercession will be accepted.’ I will praise my Lord with praises He teaches me; then I will intercede, and He will set a limit for me, and I will admit them into Paradise.

Thereafter I will return and say, ‘My Lord, none remains in the Fire except those whom the Qur’an has detained there — ⦗1172⦘ those upon whom everlastingness has been decreed.’”
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim also recorded it from the narration of Hishām.
