2058 – And I, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muslim, said: al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl informed us; he said: ʿAlī ibn Muslim narrated to us; he said: Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; he said: ʿAmr ibn Rifāʿah, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“A group will be brought out of the Fire until they have become like charcoal. It will then be announced, ‘Scatter them throughout ⦗1169⦘ Paradise and pour water over them,’ and they will grow back just as a seed sprouts in the silt carried by a flood.”
A man among the people said, “It is as though you were one of the desert folk, O Messenger of Allah.” (This is the wording of ʿAwf’s report.)
The wording transmitted by Sulaymān al-Taymī is:
“The Fire has inhabitants who will neither die in it nor live. As for certain people to whom Allah intends mercy, the Fire will touch them, after which the intercessors will enter on their behalf. The least of those intercessors will bring out bundles of them. Allah will then scatter them beside a river in Paradise, and they will sprout like a seed in the soil borne along by a torrent.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do you not see how a tree is green and then turns red?” Some people remarked, “It is as though the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had lived in the desert.”
ʿAmr ibn Rifāʿah also added, on the authority of Abū Naḍrah, in his narration: “They will then enter Paradise and remain there; they will be called the Jahannamiyyūn (the former dwellers of Hell). Later they will appeal to the Most Merciful, and He will remove that name from them, whereupon they will join the people of Paradise.”
