2052 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad reported to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl reported to us; he said: ʿUthmān ibn Khurradhādh narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād al-Makkī read out to us from his own book; he said: Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; he said: Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ṣayrafī—who is Bassām—[transmitted] from Yazīd al-Faqīr, the son of Suhayb, who said:
“I was in the company of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh when people began to speak about the Khawārij, about this community, and about the deeds they commit; we used to label them unbelievers because of their actions. Jābir rejected that from us and started to recite a verse whose opening speaks of unbelief and whose end speaks of unbelief, until he reached Allah’s words, ‘Rather, those who disbelieve deny [the truth]’ (84:22) and His words, ‘…yet they equate others with their Lord’ (6:1). He then asked, ‘Is this really the condition of your people?’ We said, ‘No; we do not recognize them in any of that.’
Jābir continued, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Some people from my ummah will be punished for their sins; they will remain in the Fire as long as Allah wills. Then the idolaters will taunt them, saying, ‘Where is that which you used to oppose us with—your affirmation and your faith?’ This will be so that Allah may let the idolaters taste a share of remorse. After that, Allah will not leave a single monotheist in the Fire without bringing him out.”’
He then recited the verse, ‘Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish they had been Muslims’ (15:2).
