2051 – ʿUbayd Allah ibn Ahmad and al-Hasan ibn ʿUthman narrated to us; they said: Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Ibrahim narrated to us; he said: Ishaq ibn al-Hasan narrated to us; he said: Abu Nuʿaym narrated to us; he said: Abu ʿAsim—Muhammad ibn Abi Ayyub al-Fuqaymi al-Thaqafi—narrated to us; he said: Yazid al-Faqir said:
“The doctrine of the Khawarij had captivated me when I was a young man. So we set out as a sizeable band intending to perform the Hajj. There we found Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah addressing the people about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while seated beside a pillar, and he was speaking about the Jahannamiyyun (those who will have been in Hell).
I said to him, ‘Companion of the Messenger of Allah, what is this that you are narrating while Allah says, “Indeed, whoever You admit to the Fire—You have certainly disgraced him” (Surah Al ʿImran 3:192)?’
He replied, ‘My dear son, do you recite the Quran?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘Have you ⦗1166⦘ heard of the Praiseworthy Station by which Allah will bring forth those He wills to bring forth?’
He then described the setting up of the Bridge (al-sirat) and the people’s passage across it. I fear I did not retain everything he said, except that he affirmed that a group of people will come out of the Fire after having been in it; they will emerge looking like charred broom-sticks. They will enter a river from the rivers of Paradise and bathe in it, and they will come out looking like white parchment sheets. We returned, and not one of us persisted in his former view except a single man.”
Muslim recorded this tradition, and the wording here is that of the narration transmitted by al-Hasan ibn ʿUthman.
