2048 – ʿAlī ibn ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; he said: ʿUbayd ibn Sharīk narrated to us; he said: Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād narrated to us; he said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said ⦗1164⦘, “A people will come out of the Fire, after they have been seared, and will enter Paradise.”

ʿAmr ibn Dīnār also said: ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A people will come out of the Fire and will enter Paradise.”

At this a man asked, “Abu ʿĀṣim, what is this ḥadīth you are narrating?” ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr replied, “Away from me, you boor! Had those of clear insight among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not heard it, I would never have reported it.”

Sufyān (ibn ʿUyaynah) said: Then ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd came to us with a man who followed his opinions. ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd entered the Ḥijr and prayed there, while his companion went out and stood over ʿAmr ibn Dīnār as he was relating this report from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The companion returned to ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd and said, “You deviant! Were you not telling us that no one will ever emerge from the Fire?” He answered, “Indeed.” The man said, “Yet here is ʿAmr ibn Dīnār claiming that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘A people will come out of the Fire and will enter Paradise.’” ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd replied, “That statement has a meaning you do not understand.” The man retorted, “And what meaning could that possibly have?” Sufyān said: ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd then pulled his cloak free from the man’s hands and walked away.
