2037 – Ahmad reported to us; ʿAli reported to us; Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us; he said: ʿAmr ibn ʿAwn narrated to us; he said: Abu Qudāmah, from Thābit, from Anas, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked a man, “Did you do such-and-such?”
The man replied, “No, by Allah—besides whom there is no deity—I did not.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, however, knew that he had in fact done it. He repeated the question several times, and each time the man swore he had not. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah has erased the sin of your lie by virtue of your affirmation of lā ilāha illā Allāh (there is no god but Allah).” ⦗1159⦘
