2027 — ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us; Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar al-Muṭayrī related; he said: Abū Naṣr ʿĀmir ibn Muḥammad al-Baṣrī narrated; he said: Rawḥ ibn ʿUtbah narrated:
“There was a man in Basra, in the goldsmiths’ quarter, whose trade was washing the dead. He said, ‘I was called to prepare a body for burial. When I reached the man’s feet, I began rubbing them with a small stone I kept for the purpose. Suddenly a folded note slipped out from the arch of his foot. I opened it, and inside was written:
Bismillāh al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm (In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful):
Wash your companion well, for Allah has forgiven him because he once followed a funeral procession of someone he did not even know.’”
