2026 — ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar ibn Aḥmad informed us; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Yazīd related; he said: Abū Naṣr ʿĀmir ibn Muḥammad al-Baṣrī, the hawker stationed at the garrison, narrated; he said: Muḥammad ibn al-Walīd al-Zubayrī narrated; he said: Rawḥ ibn ʿUtbah al-Karābisī narrated; he said: Maymūn al-Marʾī narrated:

“There was a notoriously disreputable man among us. When he died, the people shunned him and flung his body onto the open road. ⦗1152⦘

I sat pondering his fate and the way everyone had avoided him. As I nodded off, I suddenly saw two white birds. One of them said to the other, ‘Go inside and see whether you find any good in him.’

The bird entered through the crown of the man’s skull and emerged from his backside, saying, ‘I found no goodness at all.’

The other replied, ‘Do not be hasty.’ He then entered through the crown of the head and exited from the arch of the foot, exclaiming, ‘Allāhu akbar! Allāhu akbar! A single proclamation of the takbīr is stuck to his spleen!’ And he kept saying, ‘I testify that there is no god but Allah.’

So I called out to the people, ‘Come here, come here!’”
