2010 — Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Hārūn narrated to us; he said: Abū al-Rabīʿ narrated to us; he said: Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us, from Abū Sinān, from Yaʿqūb al-Yashkurī, who said:

A man came to Ibn Masʿūd and said, “I have committed a sin.” Ibn Masʿūd turned away from him and then turned to the people, speaking with them. ⦗1147⦘ After that he faced the man again, his eyes streaming with tears, and said, “This sin has weighed upon you; the very matter you came to ask about is what troubles you. Paradise has eight gates that open and close—except for the Gate of Repentance. Over it stands an angel entrusted with it. So keep on doing good deeds and never despair.”
