1992 — ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muslim ibn Yaḥyā related to us; he said: al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; he said: Ibn Abī Manṣūr narrated to us; he said: al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Ṣāliḥ told me, from Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah, from his brother, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Forgiveness continues to descend so long as the barrier has not been erected.” They asked, “O Prophet of Allah, what is the barrier?” He replied, “Associating partners with Him.”
He then said, “There is no soul that meets Him without having associated anything with Him except that forgiveness is conferred upon it by Allah; yet if He wills, He forgives it, and if He wills, He punishes it.”
The narrator added, “I only know that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ recited: ‘Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills’ (al-Nisāʾ 4:48).”
