1988 – And I, Aḥmad ibn al-Faraj ibn al-Ḥajjāj, relate: ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad ibn Thābit related to us; Yaʿqūb al-Dawraqī related to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn related to us; he said: Hammām, from Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿAmra, from Abū Hurayra, who traced it back to the Prophet ﷺ:
“A man committed a sin and said, ‘Lord, I have sinned—or he said: I have done a wrongful deed—so forgive me.’ Allah said, ‘My servant has committed a sin and has realized that he has a Lord who forgives sin and also calls to account; I have therefore forgiven My servant.’ Then he committed another sin—or he said: he committed a different sin—and said, ‘Lord, I have committed ⦗1138⦘ a sin, so forgive me.’ Allah said, ‘My servant has learned that he has a Lord Who forgives sin and calls to account. I call you to witness that I have forgiven My servant; let him do whatever he wishes.’ ”
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both recorded this ḥadith.
