ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muslim ibn Yaḥyā, together with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUmar—whose wording this is—reported to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Bāhilī narrated to us; he said: Marḥūm ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us; he said: Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, from Saʿd ibn Isḥāq ibn Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah, from his father, from his grandfather, who said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his Companions, “What do you say about a man who is killed in the path of Allah?”

They replied, “Paradise.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Paradise, if Allah wills.”

He then asked, “What do you say about a man who dies in the path of Allah?”

They said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Paradise, if Allah wills.”

He continued, “What do you say about a man who dies and two upright witnesses stand up and testify, ‘We know nothing concerning him but good’?”

He said, “Paradise, if Allah wills.”

He then asked, “What do you say about a man who dies and two men stand up and say, ‘We know nothing concerning him but ⦗1137⦘ evil’?”

They answered, “The Fire.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remarked, “He is a sinner, yet Allah is All-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful.”
