1981 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Juʿfi reported: “ʿAli ibn Muhammad ibn Harun al-Humaydi narrated to us; he said: Harun ibn Ishaq narrated to us; he said: Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri—[continuation follows].”
1982 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Farisi reported: “Ahmad ibn Saʿid al-Thaqafi narrated to us ⦗1135⦘; he said: Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Dhuhli narrated to us; he said: ʿUthman ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Yunus, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Idris, from ʿUbadah ibn al-Samit, who said:
‘While we were sitting in a gathering, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Pledge your allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, will not steal, will not commit adultery, will not kill your children, will not invent any calumny that you devise between your hands and feet, and will not disobey me in what is recognised as right. Whoever among you fulfills this pledge, his reward rests with Allah; and whoever commits any of these sins and Allah conceals it for him in this world—his affair is with Allah: if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him.”’
ʿUbadah added: ‘So we gave him our pledge on that basis.’
The wording is that of Yunus’s narration, and both al-Bukhari and Muslim recorded it.
