1973 – ʿUbayd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn ʿAli narrated to us; he said: al-Ḥusayn ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us; he said: Yusuf ibn Musa narrated to us; he said: Jarir narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from al-Zuhri, who said:
ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwan said to me, “What do we make of the ḥadith that says, ‘Whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise, even if he committed adultery and even if he stole’?”
I replied, “Where are you headed with this, O Commander of the Believers? That statement dates to the period before the divine commands and prohibitions were issued, before the obligatory duties were ordained.”
