1954 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Yaʿqub narrated to us; he said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad ibn al-Yaman narrated to us; he said: Shayban ibn Farrukh narrated to us; he said: Yahya ibn Kathir narrated to us, from Ghalib al-Qattan, from Bakr ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Muzani, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
“We used to believe that whoever killed a believer had inevitably earned the Fire; whoever consumed an orphan’s wealth had inevitably earned the Fire; and whoever ate usury had inevitably earned the Fire—until Allah revealed: ‘Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wills’ (al-Nisaʾ 4:48). After that we no longer knew who might fall within Allah’s will and who might be excluded from it, so we held our tongues and placed our hope in Him.”
