183—Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Yaʿqub informed us. He said: Muhammad ibn Harun al-Ruyani informed us. He said: Ahmad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Wahb informed us. He said: My uncle narrated to me. He said: Al-Layth narrated to me, from Yahya ibn Saʿid, from Khalid ibn Abi ʿImran, from Abu Hazim, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Muʿadh ibn Jabal, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Beware of three things: the error of a scholar, the hypocrite’s disputation by means of the Quran, and a worldly life that cuts off your necks. As for the scholar’s error, do not make it your religion by blindly following it; and if he errs, do not lose patience with him. As for the hypocrite’s disputation by means of the Quran, the Quran has clear landmarks, like the markers of a road: so accept what you recognize, and refer what you find objectionable back to one who has knowledge of it. As for a worldly life that cuts off your necks, whoever Allah has placed contentment in his heart is truly rich.”
