1927 – Al-Hasan ibn ʿUthmān related to us; Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar related to us, saying: Bishr ibn Mūsā related to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Aʿmash, from Mujāhid, who said:
“We were sitting with ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr when they asked him about the major sins. He listed among them ⦗1113⦘ six, and in that list he mentioned drinking wine. Someone asked, ‘Is drinking wine really one of the major sins?’
He replied, ‘Yes, it is one of the major sins. No man drinks wine in the evening without becoming a polytheist until morning, and no man drinks it in the morning without becoming a polytheist until evening. Indeed, the habitual wine-drinker is like a worshipper of al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā.’”
