1924 – Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Tusi related to us; Muhammad ibn Yaʿqub narrated to us; al-ʿAbbās ibn al-Walīd narrated to us; ʿUqbah narrated to us; al-Awzāʿī informed me; Yahyā ibn Abī Kathīr narrated to me:
“They used to enumerate the major sins, according to Ibn Masʿūd, as: shirk (associating partners with Allah), killing a believer without right, showing disrespect to Muslim parents, consuming riba (usury), slandering a chaste woman, sorcery, fleeing from the battlefield, and committing sacrilege in the Sacred Mosque.”
Ibn Masʿūd would ask, “Where do they place the yamin al-ghamūs— the oath that plunges one into sin?” ⦗1112⦘
They said, “What is the yamin al-ghamūs?”
He replied, “It is when a man, by means of his oath, seizes his brother’s property.”
