1915 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman narrated to us; he said: Yahya ibn Muhammad narrated to us; he said: al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan narrated to us; he said: Ibn al-Mubarak reported to us; he said: Ibn Jurayj narrated to us; he said: ʿUthman ibn Abi Sulayman related that Abu Salama ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman said, “Among the major sins is abandoning the Hijrah (emigration).”

ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz and ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthman replied, “We have never heard that.” Abu Salama then fell silent. When the gathering broke up, a man remarked, “You had no cause to keep silent, for ʿAlī ibn Abi Talib used to say: ‘For a migrant to turn back on his heels is one of the major sins.’”
