1901 – Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn al-ʿAbbas informed us. He said: Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Saʿid narrated to us. He said: Yaʿqub ibn Ibrahim, al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan, and Ibrahim ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn al-Muqawwam all narrated to us; they said: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us—ḥadith.
1902 – Ahmad ibn ʿUbayd likewise related to us; Ali ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashshir narrated to us. He said: Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Mansur, Wasil, and al-Aʿmash, from Abu Waʾil, from ʿAmr ibn Shurahbil, from ʿAbd Allah (ibn Masʿud). He said:
I asked, “Messenger of Allah, which sin is greatest in Allah’s sight?”
He replied, “That you set up a rival to Allah while He created you.”
I said, “Then which?”
He said, “That you kill your child out of fear that he will eat with you.”
I asked, “Then which?”
He answered, “That you commit adultery with your neighbour’s wife.”
This wording is that of the narration transmitted by Ahmad ibn Sinan. It was recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
