A survey of the reports transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ concerning the sins he counted as major sins includes the following: associating partners with Allah (shirk), murder, fornication, disobedience to parents, the perjurious oath (yamīn al-ghamūs), consuming usury, sorcery, devouring the property of an orphan, fleeing from the battlefield, slandering chaste women, bearing false witness, theft, violating the sanctity of the Sacred House, and reverting to life among the Bedouins after migration.

Ibn ʿAbbās was asked about the major sins—“Are they seven?”—and he replied, “They are closer to seventy than to seven.”

A separate report from Ibn ʿAbbās states, “Causing harm through one’s bequest is among the major sins.” ⦗1104⦘

Ibn Masʿūd said, “Despairing of Allah’s mercy, feeling secure from Allah’s plan, and lying are major sins.”

ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr said, “Drinking wine is among the major sins.”
