Abu Jaʿfar Muhammad ibn Ali was asked about the Prophet’s words, “The adulterer does not commit adultery while he is a believer, and the thief does not steal while he is a believer.” He replied, “This is Islam.” Then he drew a large circle and, within it, another, smaller circle, saying, “This inner circle is faith, enclosed within Islam.
