1855 — ʿAli ibn Muhammad ibn ʿUmar related to us; ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim related to us; he said: al-Hasan ibn Yusuf ibn Abi al-Muntab related to us; he said: Muslim ibn Mukhalid al-Taʾifi said:
“I saw the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in a dream and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the Qadarites?’ ⦗1082⦘ He replied, ‘Magians.’ I then asked, ‘What do you say about the Rafidites?’ He answered, ‘They are worse than the Qadarites, or the Qadarites are worse than they.’ I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the Murjiʾites?’ He said, ‘They are beneath them, and they oppose the Sunnah.’ I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the doubters?’ He said, ‘Lost and ruined is the one who entertains doubt about me.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, they do not doubt you; they simply do not know what their standing is with Allah.’ He replied, ‘Glory be to Allah! Does anyone know what he is in Allah’s sight?’”
Al-Hasan said: Sufyan ibn ʿUyaynah and Yahya ibn Sulayman came to him and asked him about this vision. When he reached the part where I said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the doubters?” he said, “Why did you not say: ‘A people filled with apprehension’?”
