1852 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan related: ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Rāzī of Nīshāpūr told us; he said: I heard Sulaym ibn Manṣūr ibn ʿĀmir recite:

“O you who proclaim, ‘I am a believer,’
know that faith is nothing but word and deed.

Irjāʾ is merely an innovated creed,
laid down and espoused by Jahm ibn Ṣafwān. ⦗1078⦘

The religion of Allah is a straight and upright way:
it enjoins fasting and prayer that is actively performed,

and it prescribes zakāh and jihād
against anyone who wages war on the religion through aggression and bloodshed.

The one who perfects faith is not he
who prays only when seen, and neglects it when unseen,

or who, when overtaken by impurity one day,
forgoes the ghusl (ritual bath) out of licentiousness or laziness.

Such a person is dubbed ‘the believer by mere profession,’
not a true believer—for the truth he has not upheld.

I am neither Murjiʾī nor Harbī—certainly not—
nor do I subscribe to the doctrine of the Muʿtazilī.

My view is the view of Sufyān,
and Sufyān never followed a way that went astray.”
