1839 – Muhammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Muhammad ibn Humayd related to us; Ahmad ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Wakil informed us; ʿAmr ibn ʿAli said: Abu Dawud narrated to us; he said: Shuʿbah narrated to us; he said: Zubayd reported:
“When the Murjiʾah (the postponement sect) first emerged, I went to Abu Waʾil, and he told me—from the Prophet ﷺ—‘Reviling a Muslim is wickedness, and fighting him is disbelief.’
Shuʿbah added: “Mansur and Sulayman also narrated to me; they had heard Abu Waʾil relate—from ʿAbd Allah—from the Prophet ﷺ—‘Reviling a Muslim is wickedness, and fighting him is disbelief.’
Shuʿbah continued: “I mentioned this to Hammad, and he would say, ‘O Shuʿbah, you are one of us except for a single drop!’ I said to him, ‘Do you suspect Zubayd? Do you suspect Mansur? Do you suspect al-Aʿmash ibn Sulayman? Each of them reported it to me from Abu Waʾil.’ He replied, ‘No, but I do suspect Abu Waʾil himself.’"
