1834 – Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr reported to us; Muḥammad ibn Makhlad reported to us; he said: Abū Mūsā Ḥumrān ibn Masʿūd al-Dahhān read to us from his own book; he said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn Ḥassān al-Marwazī narrated to us; he said: Sufyān al-Thawrī declared, “Beware of these deviant whims.” He was asked, “Explain them to us, may Allah have mercy on you.” Sufyān replied, “The Murjiʾah, for example, say that faith is mere speech without deeds. According to them, whoever says, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger,’ is a believer of fully perfected faith—his faith, they claim, equals the faith of Gabriel and the angels—even if he has killed countless believers, even if he omits the ritual bath after major impurity, even if he abandons the prayer. They even deem it lawful to raise the sword against the People of the Qiblah (their fellow Muslims).”
