1751 — Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Umar narrated to us. Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us. He said: I heard Harmalah ibn Yahya say:
“Hafs al-Fard and Maslan—this being the name of a man—the Ibadi, gathered with al-Shafi‘i in the house of al-Jarawi, that is, in Egypt. They discussed faith, and Maslan argued for its increasing and decreasing. Al-Shafi‘i then became impassioned and took up the question, maintaining that faith consists of speech and action; it increases and decreases. He utterly crushed Hafs al-Fard and tore him to pieces.”
